SS2014 catwalk orange lip looks on a budget

The lipstick colour of the season is orange, big and bold. How can you get an orange lip look on a budget that still looks as good as the catwalk colours? Like this!

First up, we have the biggest high fashion look – the strong, true orange lip. It needs to be fairly opaque and pigmented, and that’s hard to find in the high street chemists’ shops, but rest assured you are going to get your money’s worth with these.

From left to right:

  • Sleek lipstick in Tangerine Scream, RRP £4.99. Loads of pigment, opaque and moderately matte. Seems to have sold out in the high street shops, but you can buy it online directly from Sleek (ignore the missing colour swatch, it’s still in the drop-down menu).
  • Maybelline Colorsensational Vivids lipstick in Electric Orange (shade 912), RRP £7.19. This is really wearable and currently reduced to £6.99 at Superdrug where you can also buy one Maybelline product and get another one half price, or it’s £7.19 in Boots and also in their 3-for-2 offer.
  • Seventeen Lip Crayon in Bold, RRP £4.99. A lot of colour payoff for not very much cash, looks great on, and it’s also in the Boots 3-for-2.

Very bold lip colours can attract a lot of attention, show up minor imperfections in the skin or highlight lines and wrinkles. If you’d like to rock a more off-duty orange lip, try these softer colours which are nicely flattering and still on-trend.

From left to right:

  • Bourjois Colour Boost lip crayon in Orange Punch (shade 03), RRP £7.99. A pink-orange shade of coral with SPF15 that’s moisturising, great quality and very easy to wear. Gorgeous, but wait for a 3-for-2 offer to come along before buying and the cost comes down to £5.33 or so.
  • Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Peche Cosy (shade 03), RRP £7.99. A soft peachy-orange with a bit of cream, kind of like a nude but with a lot more ooomph, and suited to fairer skins. Again, buy it during a 3-for-2 offer and you’ll bring the price down.
  • NYC Smooch Proof 16hr LipStain in Orange on the Go, RRP £3.99. The perfect sheer orange, although like all lipstains it needs lip balm over the top. Currently on sale at Superdrug for £2.79 and it’s part of the buy-1-get-1-half-price offer too.

The final orange lip look is old-fashioned Hollywood glamour, as we’ve also seen the return of striking red-orange lipstick. Turn heads with some fire-engine reds…

From left to right:

  • Rimmel Moisture Renew lipstick in In Love With Ginger (shade 660), RRP £6.49. Excellent formulation, as good as many top end brands, and a dupe for MAC’s Morange into the bargain. Currently in the buy-1-Rimmel-get-1-half-price at Superdrug, and the mix & match 3-for-2 at Boots.
  • Topshop Lips in Infrared, RRP £8.00. A little more pricey, but a truly great shade with a velvet finish. If I ever work out how to get discount on these you’ll be the first to know.
  • E.L.F. Moisturising Lipstick in Velvet Rope, RRP £3.95. Amazingly good for the price, suitable for vegans, and can be sheered out or built up. I only shop at ELF during half price offers, so mine set me back £1.98 – worth every penny. Look out for codes in their newsletter, on their front page, or via their Twitter and Facebook.

There you go – pucker up!
