Spring Summer makeup trends on a budget: The bold lip look
Love designer makeup looks, but only have a high street budget? Here’s how to get the Bold Lip SS17 catwalk makeup look for less and still look gorgeous.
Bright and bold lipstick takes full focus in this look, paired with barely-there neutral makeup for the rest of the face. Look out for hot red lipsticks in shades ranging from orange-red to cherry, and a variety of finishes from matte to satin to glossy. There were some hot pink, burgundy and orange bold lips on the catwalks too, if that’s more your shade.
Best place to start: From left to right, above. Rimmel has several designer lipstick looks on a budget, especially the Lasting Finish and Kate lipstick collections, priced £5.49 to £6.49 with all kinds of shades and finishes. The 15-year anniversary collection (above) is especially good, and features three different reds. NYX has an amazing range of lip products (try the liquid suede lipstick, matte lipstick, velvet matte lipstick, extra creamy round lipstick or soft matte lip cream), prices £4.00 to £7.00, and the ELF Studio Velvet Matte Lipsticks have some striking bright shades for just £4.50.

- Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet, £8.99
- L’Oreal Color Riche lipsticks, £6.99
- Maybelline Colour Sensational lipsticks, £6.99, and Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid lipsticks, £6.99
Shiny glosses and lip paints are having a little moment too, look out for the fun bright shades of Lottie London Glossip Girl, £5.95, Maybelline Color Drama Lip Paint, £4.99, MUA Luxe Lip Lacquer, £3.00, or Models Own Lip Gunk, £7.99. If you’re buying online, remember to do a search for swatches first to make sure you have a good idea of what each colour looks like.
Bargains for £1 or so: From left to right, above. For those on an even tighter budget, try MUA (Make Up Academy) for several great shades starting at only £1. In reds there’s a matte lipstick for £1 called Scarlet Siren, or standard creamy lipsticks for £1 in Coral Flush (orange red) or Shade 13 (true red). The Luxe Vivid lipsticks are also well worth a look, especially in shades Hot Chilli (spicy red), Red Alert (movie star red), Burn Baby Burn (orange) and Rocket (hot pink/rose), all £3.00. You might also like the new £1 creamy lipstick in Pomegranate shade, a strong reddish pink.
Budget babes should also check out the offerings from Makeup Revolution. Their Amazing Lipstick range is only £1 and performs well. They also have an Iconic range of mattes for £2.49 to £3.00, and a more luxurious Rose Gold range for £3.00 that includes a hot red and a hot pink. The dinky Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker mini matte balm sticks in Firecracker and Woah Pink are also great for £3.50.
Extra edgy: If you want something more edgy for a big night out, look out for glitter lips, and metallic or holographic finishes. One of the best budget buys this season is MUA Luxe Velvet Matte Metallic Lip Lacquer, £3.00.
Don’t forget the lipliner: Keep lipstick in place and prevent feathering with a matching or clear lipliner pencil. GOSH’s Velvet Touch lipliners, £4.99, are as good as any designer offering, but if you have less to spend then try a NYX slim Lipliner Pencil with a massive shade range, £3.00, a reliable Barry M Lip Liner, £2.99 (£3.99 for the clear version), or a budget-friendly MUA clear lip liner for £1.00 which comes with its own sharpener.
A gentler version: From left to right, above. This can all be a bit stark and unforgiving for pale or mature skins, but you can soften it up nicely for a much more casual summer face by using some very subtle light bronzer and a sheer red or hot pink lip product. Try Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzer (light version), £3.00, or Rimmel Sun Shimmer Bronzing Powder in Light Matte, 5.59. Team with a Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Candy Apple or Wild Watermelon, £7.99, an MUA Sweet Sheen balm in Rouge Rumba, £2.00, or a Soap & Glory mini Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in one of the brighter shades like Technicoral or Pink Punch, £3.50.
Then add some pale-ish neutral eyeshadow and plenty of mascara to complete the look, and you’re done. Look out for a £15 Face Challenge for this look coming soon, with examples of ways to put the whole thing together beautifully for under £15.
