Penny Choose: Dove Purely Pampering lotion with pistachio cream and magnolia
After last week’s post about the importance of having a few small treats every now and again, it looked like a little pampering was high on most people’s lists of favourites. This week’s Treat Under a Tenner is Dove’s new Purely Pampering nourishing lotion with pistachio cream and magnolia, and here’s a quick review.
The top four ingredients in this product are water, glycerin, stearic acid and caprylic triglyceride, which is a pretty good combination for moisturising and water-binding. It smooths on and doesn’t feel too heavy or greasy, and sinks in nicely. I tried putting it on one evening and then not moisturising the next day after my morning shower, and my skin still felt soft even on the elbows, so I was quite impressed.
There has been some buzz about this being like the Laura Mercier Creme de Pistache luxury body range. Well, it isn’t a direct dupe, although it does contain the same ‘Pistacia vera seed extract’ fairly high up the ingredients list. The Laura Mercier product is a full-on gourmand fragrance, mainly pistachio and cream with some hints of almond and hazelnut, not too far from an ice cream scent.
The Dove pistachio cream and magnolia lotion is more of a fresh floral mixed with a sweet gourmand. The magnolia adds a creamy note and there’s a subtle pistachio scent mixed in there sitting close to the skin, along with a little light musk and maybe some vanilla too – more like a touch of pistachio macaron than an ice cream blast. It lasts a few hours too.
Not a direct Creme de Pistache rip-off then, but very pleasant in its own right and the only high street pistachio body lotion I’ve come across, and definitely deserving of the title of Treat of the Week. There’s a matching shower gel in the same range too, which I might just have to try next.
I bought mine from Superdrug, where the price on the shelf was £3.99 for a 250ml bottle. However, mine rang through at £1.99 at the till so it looks like there was a special introductory offer that week which now seems to have finished. They don’t have it listed on their website yet, but if you’d like to buy online it’s on offer at Boots, and it’s also available at Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado.
EDITED TO ADD: The matching shower gel is now starting to be sold by more stores. Its full name is Dove Purely Pampering Nourishing Body Wash Pistachio Cream with Magnolia, and it’s very rich and creamy. I’ve just picked some up in store at Boots where they were selling two 250ml bottles for £3 – think the RRP is going to be £2.29 – it’s not listed on their site though.
It’s currently on offer at Tesco (buy one get one free), and you can also find it at Ocado.
