Outdoor living trends for 2024 – at high street prices

It’s time to brighten up those outdoor spaces, get summer ready, and have a look at some of the biggest outdoor living trends for 2024.

They’re all inspired by designer looks, but fortunately for our budgets the high street has come up with some more affordable versions.

The designer Steel Frames trend – on a budget

Metal tube and wire framed outdoor furniture is having a moment. It’s ultra modern, with a small hint of 70s retro, and is especially suited to urban yards, patios and balconies. My favourite range is the Lucinda seats and tables from Habitat’s 60th Anniversary range, which can be mixed and moved around to suit your needs.

There’s a colour for most tastes, with lots of white or black, plus pops of colour including pea green, yellow, orange and purple.

Team it with streamlined or angular planters, folding metal side tables and one or two modernist garden decor accessories to complete the look.

The Garden Retreat trend – but make it affordable

Think of this as a more relaxed version of the country cottage trend. The looks are all about calmness, immersing yourself in nature and creating peaceful, beautiful spaces. This includes outdoor reading nooks, informal dining, and places to have a quiet cup of tea.

Look out for natural materials such as wood and real wicker and rattan, and ornate wrought iron. Key colours are soft greys, greens and creams. There are hints of pastel colours too, especially pale yellows and pinks.

Whimsical or vintage-inspired accessories are covered in flowers, ferns or bee motifs, and I especially like the new garden ornaments in the National Trust online shop, prices from £6. There’s also a good selection of tableware as part of this trend at Matalan.

The French Riviera trend – at high street prices

The real French seaside can be veeeerrry expensive indeed, but you can recreate this fun, chic look quite easily in your own back garden without going over budget.

All the collections include plenty of sea blue, plus lighter blues, and bright peach/coral, pink and yellow. Motifs include stripes, geometric wave patterns, and stylised shells, corals and fruits, and the occasional fun lobster cushion or bowl.

If you’re looking for a few accessories, try quirky cushions, fish or shell shaped dishes, and striped beach towels like these £8 Habitat ones, or a striped outdoor rug like this reversible yellow / blue rug from Dunelm (see picture below).
