Mini Storecupboard Challenge: Day 3
Today we’re delving into the back of the storecupboard and making a meal using pulses. These are a common storecupboard essential, so I hope you’re stocked up!
There are all kinds of pulses, but here are a few common things you might have in tinned or dried form:
- chickpeas
- kidney beans
- butter beans
- red lentils
- black eye beans
- black beans or turtle beans
- flageolet beans
- cannellini beans
- yellow split peas
- borlotti beans
- green, brown or Puy lentils
A few other things you might have:
- refried beans or pinto beans
- different kinds of dall / dahl
- mung beans or aduki beans
- soya beans
- TVP / textured vegetable protein
- soya based burger or sausage mix
- packets of veggie mixes such as Beanfest or veggie bolognese
- cans of mixed bean salad
- lentil based soup or casserole mixes
- gram flour (ground dried chickpeas)
- urad flour (lentil flour)
- poppadums / poppadoms / pappadums
- falafel mix
What are you going to make? If you’re feeling stuck, here are a few quick ideas:
- curry with chickpeas or lentils
- poppadoms, pickles and cucumber raita
- bean or lentil burgers or croquettes
- veggie chilli
- lentil salad
- falafel in pita bread
- hummus or bean dip
We have all kinds of pulses and soup mixes here, and I think I’m going to do a quick lentil dall with mango chutney and naan bread on the side. That’s something I can whip up very quickly and easily, and I won’t need to soak any beans.
Speaking of which, if you do make something with dried beans or chickpeas make sure you start soaking them this morning. Otherwise it might be easier to go with tinned beans or quick cooking lentils.
What’s hiding in your storecupboard, pantry or larder today? What are you going to make with it?
Veggie sausage mix, must have been in the cupboard for yonks, bangers and mash!
Done, According to the program, I did a savoury vegetable chickpea tagine yesterday night for today’s lunch, made with half a pumpkin from the garden, 1 small courgette, some green beans and 1 tomato + tagine spices. The leftover will be mixed up for a soup tonight.
I’m going to make green lentil and spinach soup today. There’s a bag of forlorn spinach in the fridge so soup seems like the best plan. Now you mention it, I do have some mung beans hanging around so I think dhal will be on the hob tomorrow.
