Catwalk makeup looks for less: Part 1
New season, new makeup looks to try out, but you don’t need to spend £33.50 here and £27.99 there to try out all the latest trends. Here are some of my favourite products to try for this Autumn/Winter, and they’re all well under £10.
Look number 1: The glamorous grunge look
That’s right, the grunge look is back, seen on many catwalks including Anna Sui, Alexander Wang and many more. This time around it’s quite muted, with copper, sienna and bronze eyeshadows smudged all the way around the eye, hardly any blush, and mainly neutral lip colours. Have a look at some of the pictures on Vogue and SkyShowbiz – you don’t need too many products to get this look.
I’ve had a play with a couple of the new Intense Lip Colours from GOSH that would go well with this look, depending on your skin colouring. These retail at £7.99 and come in cute little bottles with their own built in mirrors and lights.
301 is a nudey-pink, and 302 is a light nudey-brown with what looks like a tinge of mauve in it. Quite strong pigmentation and coverage which is really good for the price, a very light inoffensive vanilla-cocoa scent/flavour, and fairly good staying power for a gloss. They look and feel a lot more expensive than they actually are – see the colour swatches below:
These GOSH products will be available at Superdrug from this month onwards.
You might also want to hunt down some luxe-for-less options on the discounted cosmetics websites. Right now, DirectCosmetics have some excellent deals on Pixi lipglosses, including their ‘classic’ Gloss Duo , and their ‘Dixie’ or ‘R&B’ Gloss Duos, all £1.99 each for 2 glosses (RRP £14.00). They also have my favourite Pixi Lip Booster gloss in ‘sindri’ for £2.99 (RRP £12.00) .
For grunge-glamour eyes, there are a few reasonably-priced options that look fabulous, including:
- Urban Decay Liquid Liner in ‘lucky’ (shimmery copper). I know this usually retails for quite a lot (£12.50), but you can find it on FragranceDirect for £3.99 at the moment. You only need a tiny drop to smudge about, and once on it lasts for hours.
Here’s a swatch of ‘lucky’ – it’s the top one – showing what it looks like smudged and unsmudged:
- FragranceDirect also have Urban Decay Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in ‘shag’ (light bronze), ‘baked’ (medium bronze) and ‘smog’ (a dark coppery bronze) for £3.95 (RRP £12.95).
- E.L.F. have less attractive packaging, but the products are really good for the price. Try one of their £1.50 Brightening Eye Colour quads in ‘butternut’ or ‘nouveau neutrals’, or one of their many £3.00 mineral eyeshadows. You can also hunt down several online codes to get free postage.
Really hard up? You could treat yourself to an E.L.F. quad and a Pixi lip duo for under £10, which would give you enough options for daytime and evening looks.
