Capsule wardrobe makeup bag revamp Autumn 2016
Optional activity today, for the makeup fans. It’s time to give that makeup bag a quick makeover and streamline for Autumn and Winter 2016. As the seasons change you might like to change out your neutrals and colour cosmetics for some different seasonal shades. Bronzes and golds give way to taupes and browns, and pinks and corals are replaced by plum tones.
Pick a couple of looks for eyes, lips and cheeks – one colour and one neutral – and you can mix and match your way stylishly through the new season without needing to buy too much new stuff.
My top picks for the coming season
In the picture above I’ve included an Autumn neutral favourite, the extra long lasting Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24hr Cream Gel Eyeshadow in Permanent Taupe, £4.99 at Boots. A quick smudge of this and you’re set for the day, or build it up more for an easy smoky eye. Look out for the ‘buy one get one half price’ Maybelline offer too.
The NYC palette in Night Out pictured above has 12 different shades, including plums, taupes and khakis. That’s a whole season of different looks right there, and it even has easy mini makeup tutorials on the back of the box. The quality is a lot better than you’d expect for £6.99 too.
For blushers, my absolute favourite this season is the Artdeco Sound of Beauty Blush Couture (top right). It’s finely milled, great quality and the colours are very flattering, including a neutral shade, a spice tone and a deep soft rose-mauve. For everyday looks I swirl a big brush lightly over the whole palette, and for nights out I use a smaller blush brush and pick out the individual colours. £18.90 at BeautySpin.
If that’s out of your price range the Makeup Revolution Ultra Blush Palette in Sugar & Spice, £6.00 at Superdrug, which will give you lots of different looks and a very decent amount of pigment for the price tag.
Nothing says ‘new season’ like a new lipstick, does it? There are some great liquid matte nude lipsticks around at the moment that won’t dry your lips out in the cooler weather, including NYX soft matte lip cream in Stockholm (£5.50 at Boots and a pretty good Kylie Jenner dupe) and Sleek Matte Me ultra smooth matte lip cream in Birthday Suit (£4.99 at Superdrug).
If you’d like something very easy to wear in a ‘my lips but better’ way and a more glossy finish, try a Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie, £7.99. It adds a pretty hint of berry and keeps chapped lips at bay.
While the go-to Autumn lipstick for most of us is a shade of plum, if you want a high fashion look this season then try a hot red or a dark lip instead. The lippies in the right in the picture above are Rimmel the Only 1 Lipstick in Revolution Red and Oh So Wicked, and they’re very impressive for the tiny £6.99 price, holding their own against many designer offerings. Currently two for £10 in the offer at Boots too, so you could get a nude and a bright one, or one of their great plum or wine shades.
Are you changing your makeup over for the new season? What’s on your shopping list?
Nearly done, lippy – mid tone spicy for day and muted bronze for evening, eye shadow sorted etc. but no blusher yet but not needed in daytime. I have enjoyed this week. Trying to balance the look avoiding mutton dressed as lamb or frumpy old biddy!
Done. I reorganised all the colours and threw away some products with a past due date. I sized down my make-up box. All I need to do now is work on my capsule wardrobe.
Thanks for this week. I really enjoyed the theme.
Hi Jackie – Sounds good to me! Steer clear of anything with chunks of glitter in it and you should be OK. Had a look at the NYX range of single blushers yesterday in Boots and was impressed by the range of colours, might be worth a look? £5.50 each.
Hello Patricia – I’ve thrown away some old makeup too. Makes it easier to find the good stuff in a hurry in the morning 🙂
Glad you have both enjoyed yourselves this week, and thanks for keeping me up to date with your news, progress and ideas.
