Autumn 2018 capsule wardrobe outfits AW2018 how to style

Here’s some new season outfit inspiration for making the most out of the latest 20-piece Autumn capsule wardrobe. If you aren’t feeling too confident then don’t worry, I’m going to show you exactly how to put together all kinds of different looks with maximum ease and you’ll be styling like a boss in no time, promise.

The curated collection of clothes includes five tops and five bottoms, giving you 25 basic combinations (i.e. each skirt of pair of trousers can be paired with five different tops, so 5 x 5 = 25) that all look great together. You can then use jackets, shoes, bags and optional accessories such as scarves and necklaces to style each top-bottom combination up and down to create looks for all kinds of occasions.

Even a complete beginner should be able to make two very different outfits from each combo of top and trousers/skirt, because the latest 20-piece capsule wardrobe has been chosen using my rules for beginners and all the pieces harmonise together. For example, you could take the two pieces and make one outfit that’s very casual and another that’s very smart, or one variation you put together could be simple and another variation could be more complex. With a bit more practice you might be able to get four or more outfits from each of those 25 top-trousers/skirt combos, giving you over 100 different looks.

Here are five basic outfits that I’ve styled up and down to give you an idea of just how versatile this 20-piece collection of clothes can be.

Outfit 1: Paisley top and paisley skirt

I’ve put these two separates together so that they look like a dress (a very Isabel Marant AW18 sort of dress), and styled one as a pretty, feminine boho outfit and the other as a more edgy and urban cool outfit with western boots and sharp tailoring.

Outfit 2: Nude stripe shirt and blue slim leg jeans

These wardrobe staples can be worn in so many outfits, so here I’ve styled the one on the left in a very simple and relaxed way (how bloggers seem to look so nonchalant, even if they’re Instagramming away like crazy) and I’ve dressed them up more in the collection on the right for weekend dining and socialising.

Outfit 3: Burgundy shirt and black skinny jeans

A dark shirt and a dark jean together are so perfect for going out in the evening. Here we have a more rock & roll gamine version on the left, and a dressed down version on the right.

Outfit 4: Fancy sweatshirt & burnt orange culottes

Sweatshirts are usually warm enough to be worn without a jacket, so I’ve styled a couple of outfits up here using different scarves instead. Which one’s your favourite? As a side note, the culottes also look great with smart trainers, and you could wear them with longer boots as the weather becomes cooler.

Outfit 5: Leopard top & brown pleather midi skirt

This nails the animal print trend, the brown tone-on-tone trend and the leather trend. More nails than a branch of Wickes I tell you. You can wear it to look classy and luxe (styling inspo on the left), or you can go more sexy and over the top (see right), but remember not to overstyle your hair and makeup or it could all go a bit Bet Lynch. Unless that’s what you want, of course. I’m not judging.

These ten different example outfits were super easy to put together, and they work well for different occasions. I love how much variety you can get out of one week’s worth of clothes. If you like any of the clothes, shoes and accessories in this article you can find out more about them here.

Do you have a favourite piece or look? How would you style up your own combination from the 20-piece collection?
