Affordable ideas for an autumn home refresh
It’s fast turning into cosy season, so here are a few new ideas for an affordable autumn home refresh. Pass the sofa blankets and extra cushions, and let’s get comfy!
My autumn home changeover usually consists of three phases:
- Putting a few things away
- Getting old favourites back out
- Picking up a few new cosy bits
There’s some excellent stuff in the shops at the moment, but first let’s start with a few practical things.
Tidying a few things away
First of all, it’s time to put those summery things away to make space for what’s next.
I’ve already brought in my outdoor cushions and put the sun lounger in the attic, to protect garden furniture from bad weather. You might need to pick up some outdoor furniture covers if you don’t have a shed or room in the garage.

Then it’s time to put those summer clothes, shoes and accessories out of the way. I find the easiest thing to do is to check everything over to make sure it’s all clean and intact, then put it into organised storage in one go. If you use packing cubes when you go on holiday, you can re-use them to keep those high summer items neatly together.

It’s always a good idea to throw in some reliable moth protection, and use vaccuum bags too. Saves a fortune in the long run!
Getting old favourites back out

I really like getting those warmer clothes out of storage, it’s like catching up with old friends. There’s something kind of relaxing about defuzzing those favourite jumpers with my trusty bobble remover, preferably in front of some good autumn schedule telly, cup of tea nearby.

The same goes for getting extra blankets, warmer duvets and electric underblankets out of their boxes and bags, and airing them. Maybe you have some autumn-y sofa throws and cushions to put back out as well.
Picking up a few new cosy bits
There’s some excellent new decor to browse through this month, with lots of lovely deep, rich colours and patterns. I always like to start the season with a living room refresh, picking up some nice candles and home fragrance, and making the sofa more comfy.

George Home has plenty of mix and match homewares to match the season, including jar candles, cosy cushions and soft, warm lighting. There are also some great seasonal accessories such as this orange autumn leaves garland, shown above, to pep things up.

Dunelm has some very relaxed, cosy autumnal decor this season (see above), with pumpkins, soft textures, and natural shades of brown and green. I especially like some of the new cushions and home accessories.
There are also some gorgeous retro inspired colour schemes out there. For example, John Lewis has just dropped a new Timeless theme, with autumn shades, soft stripes, patchwork and neutral backgrounds. Their general ‘Autumn Decor‘ section has just about something for everyone too.

If you want to full on pumpkin mania and halloween style for the next few weeks, head straight over to Flying Tiger UK. They have everything from paint-your-own ceramic pumpkin mug kits (shown above, cute eh?) to miniature fog machines, plus spiderweb tablecloths, fun lamps, cushions and glassware.
It’s also worth hunting down some beautiful new bed linen to snuggle up in on those darker evenings.

I especially like the new bedding collection from the Natural History Museum collab with Dunelm, shown above. You can mix and match the prints with various NHM accessories such as vases and lamps, plus a few plainer cushions and sheets from Dunelm’s main collection to get it just right for your space.

Matalan is also well worth a look for seasonal bedding and other decor, including some lovely woodland and botanical prints, and timeless heritage checks. My personal favourite is the green pumpkin print range (shown above), which includes a duvet set, sofa cushions and a cosy throw.
