From fire festivals to film festivals, there’s something for just about everyone. And of course we’re gearing up for the festive season, with many festivals, events and preparations starting during November.
Bonfire Night (AKA Guy Fawkes Night)
Bonfire Night is officially the 5th of November, the anniversary of a foiled plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Many areas have organised bonfires, fireworks, and more recently drone displays. Organised events are often held the weekend before or after the 5th if it falls during the week, so check what’s happening near you.
Leeds Film Festival
The 39th edition of the Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) takes place from 30th October to 16th November 2025. It’s one of the largest annual film events in the UK, featuring over 250 features and shorts. It’s also the longest, running for 18 days in venues across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Christmas at Kew (Gardens)
Christmas at Kew 2025 is a mixture of lights, music and even some visits from Santa. This year’s night time illuminated trail showcases new creations from world-renowned artists, lighting up the famous botanical gardens.

Edinburgh Winter Festival 2025
There are multiple events in Edinburgh that run for several weeks, and during November this includes Christmas markets, an ice rink, light displays and Big Wheel rides. Some things are free, others are ticketed. The whole thing runs from 15th November 2025 to 4th January 2026, and there’s a big guide to What’s On.
It’s also St Andrew’s Day on 30th November, a holiday throughout Scotland with lots of free and low cost things to do.
Christmas Lights Switch-On
Just about every high street and other shopping area in the UK will be switching their festive lights on during November. Some parks, stately homes and botanical gardens have seasonal light displays too. It’s free to wander about and have a look at most of them. Check local listings near you for what’s on.
Christmas Markets Open
Most cities and towns will have a Christmas market of some sort from early November onwards. You don’t have to shop yourself silly at these if you’re on a budget, but it can be fun to browse around the stalls and maybe pick up a few bits and bobs. Warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine while you’re there.
