6 cheap or free things to do in October
The nights might be drawing in, but there’s still plenty to do this October. Here’s a quick guide to all kinds of interesting events around the UK, plus a little seasonal food and drink inspiration.
Most of this is low cost or free, so it won’t break the bank, and there’s something for just about everyone.
Oktoberfest
Pretty much every town and city around the UK has events for Oktoberfest, centered mostly around Barvarian beers and German foods. Some are promotions in local pubs, and others are large ticketed affairs with all kinds of entertainment laid on.
There are Oktoberfest activities throughout the month, so have a look at your local listings, check out this quick guide from Premier Inn, or get tickets for one of the big ones.
Artes Mundi Festival Cardiff
Culture vultures can enjoy this visual arts festival and prize taking place at several venues around Wales. This runs from 24th October 2025 to 1st March 2026, and many of the exhibitions and events will be free.

Black History Month UK
October is Black History Month in the UK, which acknowledges and celebrates the contributions of Black people to British society and globally. The theme for 2025 is Standing Firm in Power and Pride, recognising the strength and resilience of Black communities worldwide.
There are multiple events around the UK, with exhibitions, literature, art, careers, politics, conferences, online events and much more. Full listings here.
Cumbria Dark Skies Festival
Grab your coat, hat and woolly scarf and head out to all kinds of night time events in the Lake District between 24th October and 21st November 2025. Most of them are free or low cost, but please note that some of the free events may need to be booked in advance.
There’s everything from star gazing to bat watching, communal meals and evening viewings of architecture. There are also night time walks, swimming and canoeing if you’re into outdoorsy fitness. Full schedule at the Dark Skies website.
Halloween
The whole of October is also the run up to Halloween on the 31st, celebrating all things spooky. Wander around looking at local house decorations for free, hold your own frightfest at home with scary movies (fancy dress optional), or go to a bigger organised evening out.
There are Halloween celebrations at most big theme parks (from Alton Towers to Legoland), various stately homes, Kew Gardens, and more. Some big cities also host a range of fun events, so check out the listings for London and Manchester if you’re nearby.
