Decorating a rented property on a budget

Postby Maggie Bob » Fri Mar 09, 2012 12:10 pm

So, like a lot of people I can't afford to buy, and I thought it would be good to have some suggestions for rental friendly ways to personalise your space, without breaking the bank.

Some quick starting ideas:

- Pictures: see if you can get permission from the landlord to put some pictures up. There are now some very clever gizmos for hanging things up firmly, but in a way that doesn't damage the walls. You could find some nice old postcards, or prints and frame these yourself. Places like Ikea or Wilkos do a good range of frames - you could even buy plain ones and decorate them yourself.

- Rugs: a lot of rented places have laminate flooring, or very utilitarian carpets. A rug can add a splash of colour (I'm still tempted to try making my own rag rug from clothes destined for the rag bag).

Anyone else got ideas?

Hi Maggie Bob - this is a great idea.

If you're hanging pictures on white walls you should be able to completely hide any holes left by nails etc with a spot of Polyfilla, so you won't lose your deposit. Do agree it's better to check with the landlord first though. I've framed all sorts of stuff in the past, including leaf skeletons, scraps of fabric and ribbon, and even fancy wrapping paper from art shops. You can also go for brightly coloured frames, maybe painting them up with paint samples.

Rugs are a perfect idea, and I also think cushions and throws can be bought or made cheaply to hide hideous rental sofas. Obviously it's better to go for flame retardant fabrics and fillings if it all possible...

Anyone else - bright ideas please!
Mmmmmm, bargains!
